Guide for final theses

Prerequisites for a final thesis

Students (BA/MA) are recommended to participate in our modules. As preparation for an (empirical) final thesis, we recommend attending a seminar with us.

Application for a final thesis

The supervision of a Bachelor's or Master's thesis must be applied for centrally at the examination board of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics. The application for supervision of the final thesis must be submitted using the form provided for this purpose. Here you can find guidelines for applying for the final thesis.

Further information can be found on the homepage of the examination board.

Finding a topic and supervisor

The chair prefers that students choose their own topic and develop their own research question. The topic and research question are discussed in a preliminary meeting. All work must be related to the focus areas of our chair:

Applied microeconomics
Applied econometrics
International economics
Labour market economics

Introductory information and general tips on writing term papers and good literature research can be found on the ZBW website.

Please note: These are general guidelines. Chair-specific information and instructions coming directly from the chair take precedence.

Formal requirements for seminar papers, bachelor's theses and masters theses can be found here: Guidelines for Academic Writing (Jan 2026) (PDF)
