Final theses at the Chair of Business Analytics

Information on final theses

A final thesis at the chair is usually methodologically anchored in the field of business analytics or operations research or a combination of both. The theses usually have an application-oriented focus, for example in logistics planning in the field of e-commerce or in healthcare using the example of mental illness.

If you would like to write a final thesis at this chair, you are welcome to contact me in advance by email to discuss capacities and possible topics in more detail (if you would like to suggest your own topic, you should always write to me beforehand). You must then submit the official application for supervision of a final thesis (please note the general deadlines!).

Background: In steel production, liquid steel is transported in so-called ladles, which must be preheated to ensure high-quality steel processing. During the heating of empty ladles, which can last up to 16 hours, extensive process data is recorded. These data serve as the basis for monitoring the process and for detecting potential problems at an early stage. An interruption of the heating process is critical, as it requires restarting the entire procedure, resulting in significant time losses and economic damage. Currently, the heating process is under experimental investigation due to modifications to the facility and adjustments to the process. The collected data is highly heterogeneous and requires systematic analysis.

Objective: The objective of this thesis is to conduct an exploratory data analysis in order to identify parameters that negatively affect the heating process. This will help ensure efficient, economical, and high-quality steel production. Depending on the progress of the work, additional data analysis methods (e.g., predictive modeling) may also be applied.

Requirements:

  • The thesis is offered in cooperation with ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt.
