Drawing on German administrative tax data, the authors show that entrepreneurs as a whole donate less frequently than employees. However, this difference narrows significantly amongst religious entrepreneurs: they donate more frequently and in larger amounts than their non-religious counterparts. Furthermore, they support not only religious but also secular charitable causes. The findings illustrate that religion, as a moral anchor, can promote prosocial behaviour even in times of economic uncertainty.
