Certificates and documents requested for application or enrollment in officially certified copies must meet the requirements listed below.

An officially certified copy must contain at least:

  • a notation certifying that the copy/transcript matches the original (notation of certification)
  • the date and signature of the certifier, and
  • the imprint of the official seal. An official seal usually contains an emblem. A simple hand stamp is not sufficient.

Beglaubigung

If the copy/transcript consists of several individual sheets, it must be proven that each page is from the same document. It is sufficient if only one page bears the certification mark and signature, provided that all sheets are overstamped (e.g., in a scale-like manner) so that part of the official seal impression appears on each page.

Each page may also be certified separately. In this case, care must be taken to ensure that the name of the holder of the certificate/deed appears on each page of the original. If it is not indicated everywhere, it must be included in the certification notes along with a reference to the type of document.

If there is a copy on the front and back of a sheet and the contents of both sides are important, the certification endorsement must refer to both the front and back (e.g.: "It is hereby certified that the front/back copy is the same as the original."). If this is not the case, the front and back must be certified separately.

If there is a seal imprinted in the paper on the original (a so-called embossed seal), this will usually not be visible on the copy. The certification note on the copy must then be extended to state that there was an embossed seal of the issuer of the certificate/deed on the original.

If the certification does not meet the above requirements, the European University will not recognize the certification.

All authorities of the state, municipalities, offices and associations of municipalities, other legal entities under public law subject to the supervision of the state, which are entitled to use an official seal, e.g. residents' registration offices, the school issuing the certificate, notaries, state insurance institutions, churches organized under public law, are authorized to carry out official certification. Not recognized are certifications of health insurance companies, lawyers, auditors, associations, sworn accountants, etc. .

Language Requirements

Language requirements for German-language Bachelor's degree programmes

Applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification (= HZB, secondary school leaving certificate, e.g. Abitur or equivalent) must prove their German language skills for German-language study programs at Viadrina. German language skills should be approximately at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

* If this proof is older than 3 years, either a current proof must be submitted, or participation in our DSH-2 examination is required.

With the following German certificates you can study at the Viadrina

The DSH opens the door to your studies and is recognized by all universities in Germany as proof of language proficiency if you pass the exam at least at the level DSH-2 (DSD II).

You can take the DSH exam directly at German universities, including the Viadrina. The Language Center of the European University Viadrina offers a preparation course for this exam, as part of the pre-study courses. Information about the DSH exam (e.g. the exact date of the exam) is enclosed with the admission letter. If you have any questions, you can contact the Language Center.

DSH Preparation course

German language skills can also be proven with the TestDaF. This test can be taken at TestDaF institutes all over the world. To study at Viadrina, you need at least level 4 (TDN 4) in all four parts of the exam.

TestDaF Institute

The German Abitur, as well as equivalent German-language secondary school certificates from e.g. Austria and Switzerland, are considered as proof of German language proficiency.

The German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany - 2nd level (DSD II) with level C1 in all 4 partial examinations is also accepted.

German Language Diploma (DSD)

Another recognized language certificate is the Große Deutsches Sprachdiplom / Goethe-Zertifikat C2 (GDS) of the German Goethe Institute.

Goethe Certificate

Those who have successfully completed a German-language course of study at a German university with at least 6 semesters of standard study time do not need any further proof of language proficiency.

Those who have passed an equivalent language examination at a German Studienkolleg (Feststellungsprüfung) do not need any further proof of language proficiency.

Proof of the language examination "telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule" with an overall grade of "satisfactory" (i.e. at least 151 points) is recognized as sufficient proof of German language proficiency. The non-profit telc GmbH is a full member of the "Association of Language Testers in Europe" (ALTE). telc language examinations can be taken at over 3,000 examination centers in 20 countries, including adult education centers and private language schools.

Language Requirements for English-language Bachelor's Degree Programmes

If you want to study International Business Administration or Cultural and Social Studies, sufficient English skills are required. How to prove language skills can be found directly on the information pages of the study programs.

School knowledge is usually not sufficient.

Language Requirements for Master's Programmes

Please note that different regulations may apply to Master's programmes! Please inform yourself on the websites or with the coordinators of the corresponding master's programmes.

Important Notes on German Language Proof

Proof of your current German language skills (min. B2) must already be submitted with the application documents so that it can be determined,

  • whether your knowledge is already sufficient for your studies
  • or whether you have to take the DSH or an equivalent examination before starting your studies
  • or whether enrollment will not be possible due to insufficient language skills.

The original proof of the required language skills must be submitted at the latest at the time of enrollment (for the winter semester mid/end of August; for the summer semester mid/end of February).

Allocation of Study Places

The study places in the first semester of a degree programme with restricted admission are allocated in two ranking lists after deduction of preliminary quotas (quota for foreign non-EU citizens and stateless applicants, hardship quota, quota for second degree applicants, quota for top athletes):

  • 80% of the study places are allocated according to a university selection procedure (average grade of the university entrance qualification and any existing vocational training or experience) and
  • 20% of the study places are awarded according to waiting time (time from high school graduation to application).

On the ranking list according to performance, all applicants are sorted in ascending order according to the score of the university selection procedure; applicants with the same score are sorted among themselves again according to their waiting time.

On the ranking list according to waiting time, all applicants are sorted in descending order according to their waiting time; applicants with the same number of waiting semesters are sorted among themselves again according to their grade.
