Krieg schont weder Zivilisten noch Kulturgüter – im Gegenteil sind beide immer wieder gezielter Aggression ausgesetzt. Zerstörung und Raub von Kulturgütern, die als Bestandteile des nationalen Erbes und der nationalen Identität gelten, gehören zur Kriegstaktik ebenso wie die Instrumentalisierung von Geschichte zur Rechtfertigung territorialer Annexionspläne – Russlands Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine liefert dafür ein drastisches Beispiel.

Ein derartiges Vorgehen ist ein klarer Verstoß gegen die Bestimmungen der Haager Konvention zum Schutz von Kulturgut bei bewaffneten Konflikten von 1954, einer erweiterten Fassung der 1907 ratifizierten Haager Landkriegsordnung. Die Wirksamkeit dieses ersten völkerrechtlichen Abkommens zum Schutz von Kulturgut im Kriegsfall wurde schon wenige Jahre später, während des Ersten Weltkriegs, auf die Probe gestellt.

Die Tagung will die Strategien und Praktiken des Umgangs mit dem kulturellen Erbe auf den verschiedenen Kriegsschauplätzen des Ersten Weltkriegs in vergleichender Perspektive untersuchen. Zu fragen ist nach den Vorstufen und nach den längerfristigen Wirkungen der damals entwickelten Konzepte, ebenso wie nach den möglichen Vereinnahmungen für identitätsstiftende und/oder geopolitische Ziele in den nachfolgenden Jahrzehnten.

European University Viadrina, and the Association of Polish Economist (TEP) invite submissions to a scientific conference themed “ECONOMIC SHOCKS, RESILIENCE AND INSTITUTIONS”.
This is the third conference (the first international), which aims to commemorate Prof. Jan Winiecki and promote the exchange of ideas and research findings on societies’ coping strategies and resilience with respect to economic shocks and transformation processes (in the broadest sense) and the mitigating role of institutions.

International Conference, 23 - 25 May 2024

The conference examines the entanglements of colonial and philosophical history between the 16th and 18th centuries. Particular attention is paid to the breaks and continuities in the philosophical justification patterns of Western Europe's colonial expansion into the transatlantic region. Three panels will discuss (1) the defence of the Castilian colonial project by the School of Salamanca, including Luis de Molina; (2) the natural right justifications of land seizure, war and enslavement in early modern English liberalism and classical contract theories, especially in Thomas Hobbes and John Locke; and (3) the exclusion of the colonized from the world of sublimation, taste and moral civilizability in Western aesthetics, with a focus on Immanuel Kant. At the same time, the concept of „belligerent accumulation" in post-Marxist and decolonial philosophy will be debated.

Konferenz und Transferveranstaltung, 27.-29. Mai 2024

Was macht ein unternehmerisches Ökosystem aus und welche Rolle spielen die drei Erfolgsfaktoren Kreativität, Kommunikation und Gemeinschaft? Diesen Fragen gehen die ERLab Days 2024 nach in einer Mischung aus wissenschaftlicher Konferenz und Regionalerkundung in Berlin und Brandenburg.

Der erste Tag steht unter dem Stern des wissenschaftlichen Austauschs im unternehmerischen Kontext. Die Veranstaltung zielt auf die Vernetzung von Forscher:innen, Gründer:innen und Praktiker:innen ab, um die vielbeschworene Kluft zwischen Praxis und Forschung zu adressieren. Als Keynote Speaker sind wissenschaftliche Fachexpert:innen wie Prof. Dr. Guda Van Noort, Prof. Dr. Matthias Menter und Prof. Dr. Orla Byrne, aber auch die erfolgreiche Gründerin Natalie Erdmann geladen. Ergänzend werden Paper Development Workshops und eine abrundende Podiumsdiskussion stattfinden.

Am zweiten Tag finden Praxiserkundungen in der Eisfabrik "IceGuerilla" in Beeskow und im Hardtech-Innovationszentrums Motion.Lab in Berlin statt. Dort können Gründer:innen und Startups neue Produktentwicklungen prototypen und testen, bevor sie von der Forschung in die Entwicklung gehen.

Transnationale und globale Perspektiven waren für die kommunistische Bewegung von Beginn an von zentraler Bedeutung. Mit dem Aufschwung der Globalgeschichte und der postcolonial studies erfahren sie in der historischen Kommunismusforschung wieder mehr Aufmerksamkeit. Globalen Verflechtungen, transnational agierenden Akteur:innen sowie transnationalen Praktiken widmet sich auch die 6. Hermann-Weber-Konferenz zur Historischen Kommunismusforschung.

Summer School, August 17 – September 1 2024

Viadrinicum is an annual summer school at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), devoted to the countries of the Eastern Partnership and the larger context of Central and Eastern Europe. Building on the discussions around the notion of learning city during the last year’s edition, in 2024 the school focuses on urban space as the space for various (un)learning practices, activating different modes of knowing, sensing and being/becoming together. 

It invites students, young researchers, civil society activists, artists and cultural workers to critically reflect upon the experiences of (un)learning as a vehicle of urban transformation through constant re-imagining of the cityscape contours and trajectories. Attentive to the promises of participatory pedagogics and spatial aspects of knowledge production, the school looks into the ways how learning infrastructures are constructed through institutions of formal and non-formal education, as well as into their potential for creating diverse and transgenerational learning communities.

Genshagen Trilateral Summer School, 21 - 28 August 2024

Every summer since 2012, the Genshagen Trilateral Summer School brings together Master’s and PhD students from German, French, and Polish universities at Genshagen Castle close to Berlin to discuss a topic of European relevance. This year’s edition will take place from 21-28 August 2024 and will deal with the future of transatlantic relations. The structure of the Summer School will be threefold. First, a series of lectures given
by experts on the topic will provide participants with an overview of diff erent aspects, challenges, and implications of transatlantic relations. This theoretical part will be complemented, secondly, by a study trip to Berlin during which participants will get the chance to discuss the Summer School topic with practitioners active in the policy fi eld. At the end of the Summer School, thirdly, students will develop a future agenda for transatlantic relations (against the backdrop of a possible American withdrawal from Europe). The summer school is co-organised by the Lettres Sorbonne Université and the European University Viadrina.

International Conference, 19 to 21 September 2024

We live in a world of constant change. There are periods, however, of accelerated change in the political, economic, social or technological sphere. Usually, these spheres are closely interrelated and entangled. If this change is of fundamental character, scientists usually speak of ´transformations´. Common examples are the political and economic system changes, i.e. transformations, in Latin America, Southern Europe or Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in the past decades.

The aim of the conference is to shed light on technological, but also political, societal and environmental sides of these transformations in Europe and other regions in past and present. Technology can be a major factor to enhance, slow down or ease such transformations. Processes of circulation and appropriation of knowledge, ideas and artefacts provide a broad field of research to better understand aspects of political, societal or environmental transformations in connection with technology. Special attention can be paid to the following themes: (1) technologies as a driver of political, societal or environmental changes or as an obstacle, (2) technological “revolutions”, transitions and “transformations” and their impact on politics, societies and environment, (3) discourses on (technological) changes, especially with regard to sustainability.
