2018

Guest lecture and discussion with Mads Pankow on consulting practice
As part of the "Organizational Theories" reading seminar, Mads Pankow shows how relevant abstract concepts of organizational theory are for everyday use. In his guest lecture on "Luhmann's organizational theory in consulting practice" Pankow gave insights on his work and experience as a political consultant, including for the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs or as a policy advisor at the 'Innovationsbüro'. Pankow vividly illustrates how the role of the consultant in Luhmann's sense is primarily to irritate existing structures and 'systems': sometimes it takes a view from the outside, in Luhmann's case the environment of the system, to sharpen an awareness of organizational problems and to develop new ways of thinking. This is achieved when consultants firstly do something counterintuitive: Consultants observe which differences are bridged by organizational structures and contrast them with the interpretations and problem perceptions that already exist in the organization. In a sense, they create 'new' problems. Consultants observe which differences are bridged by organizational structures and contrast them with the interpretations and problem perceptions that already exist in the organization. However, it is precisely in this function that they are part of the system: as part of the autopoietic structure of the system, which reproduces itself and must always remain connectable.
