Participants have the chance to earn a course requirement (Eigenleistungsschein). Teams of up to 3 students will prepare a case study of family decision-making using their own developed experimental designs. Those final papers should include an introduction/motivation section, a literature review, the experimental design and implementations but not including experimental results. At the end of the course students are expected to present their findings to the class (block course schedule to be agreed upon during 1st lecture). Students are supposed to excerpt articles provided as core readings during the 1st block on a weekly basis.

Qualifikationsziele des Moduls:
Students will gain an understanding of intrahousehold bargaining and experience in creating own research projects with stages from planning through designing economics experiments and recruiting participants, i.e. building a subject pool by interviewing local decision makers, drafting invitation letters. The major class assignment is to design an economic experiment.
At the end of the semester, students are able to hand in a case study of family-decision-making based on their aquired skills of designing experiments, such as controlled and field experiments. Finally, they know how to read and write English written scientific papers.
Inhalte des Moduls:
This course describes how multi-person households make decisions concerning time, financial or consumption aspects. In the beginning of the course, during the 1st block, students read English written surveys and original papers on household choice dealing with institutions, social norms and culture as impacts on individual’s bargaining power within a household using a theoretical, experimental and empirical perspective. Applying experimental economics, we see how traditional theory on the economics of the family and intra-family bargaining could be supported and developed by the help of economic experiments.

Besonderes (z.B. Online-Anteil, Praxisbesuch, Gastvorträge, etc.):
Students are expected to collect data about a possible subject pool; for this interviews e.g. with local authorities are to be planned by themselves. Because of the german-polish border, also cultural aspects can be taken into account for analyzing intrafamily decision-making. During weekly meetings, students will have the opportunity to clarify questions and discuss their work progress with the lecturer and fellow students.
