It is possible to earn a course requirement (Eigenleistungsschein). No final exam, but an acceptable Group Presentation as well as regular participation in the course is required in order to pass. Failure to participate in any one of these activities will result in failure to achieve a passing mark.

Aim of the module (expected learning outcomes and competencies to be acquired):
Production/operations management involves the integration of numerous activities and processes to produce products and services in a highly competitive global environment. Many companies have experienced a decline in market share as a result of their inability to compete on the basis of product design, cost or quality. Most now agree that world class performance in operations, i.e., in product design, manufacturing, engineering and distribution, is essential for competitive success and long term survival. This course considers the operations from a managerial perspective. We will consider key performance measures of operations (productivity, quality and response time) as well as important concepts for improving the performance of operations along these dimensions. At the end of the course students will have a fair understanding of the role Production/Operations Management plays in business processes. Emphasis is given both to familiarization of various production processes and service systems, and to quantitative analysis of problems arising in the management of operations.
Contents of the module:
This course addresses the management of operations in manufacturing and service firms. Diverse activities, such as determining the size and type of production process, purchasing the appropriate raw materials, planning and scheduling the flow of materials and the nature and content of inventories, assuring product quality, and deciding on the production hardware and how it gets used, comprise this function of the company. Managing operations well requires both strategic and tactical skills. During the term, we will consider such topics as: process analysis, workforce issues, materials management, quality and productivity, technology, and strategic planning, together with relevant analytical techniques. This course will provide a survey of these issues.
The course makes considerable use of business cases. For each case, you will be asked to review actual company situations and apply your technical and managerial skills to recommending courses of action. Most cases will be from manufacturing companies, but some will be service-oriented. A number of cases will involve international companies or issues. With any case, the important question to prepare for is what you would do in the situation, and why, with the relevant numbers and analysis worked out as best you can.
